Provided by Island Health

Promotes the health and well-being of children who may have been maltreated and to support their families to create a positive environment for grown and development.
The VI SCAN team does not provide emergency services. The following services are provided through VI SCAN:
  • Provide medical services to suspected victims of abuse
  • Help determine the cause of a child’s illnesses or injuries
  • Train professionals and educate the community about child abuse
  • Conduct research to improve prevention, identification, and treatment of child abuse
Referrals for this program are accepted from MCFD, First Nation agencies, health care providers and the police.

Before your visit you will be contacted by the VI SCAN nurse who will ask questions about your child’s medical history. On the day of your visit expect to be at the clinic for 2-3 hours. At the appointment the team will listen to what happened to your child or why you brought your child to the clinic, ask more questions about your child’s medical history, complete a physical exam, ask for basic information about your family situation, and carefully document all the information we are given.
