Family / Parenting, Indigenous Services, and Legal

Family Law Advocacy Program: Provides citizens of Port Alberni and surrounding areas with information, referrals, and support regarding their unique family law challenges and journeys. This service is open to all and free of charge. The Family Law Advocacy Program provides information and support regarding the following:
Guardianship of children and parenting time with children:
- Parental responsibilities (who makes decisions for the children)
- Relocation of/with children
- Child support
- Spousal support
- Divorce
- Assistance with drafting separation agreements and consent orders
- Protection orders
- Filing with Family Maintenance Enforcement Agency (FMEA)
- Relocation
- Property & debts – up to 20k
- Child protection
Outreach Legal Advocate: The primary goal of this program is to ensure quality service delivery of legal advocacy for anyone needing assistance. Areas covered by the OLA program:
- Income Security Program: BCEA/Welfare, Persons With Disabilities, OAS/GIS applications, CPP & Disability applications, EI, WCB information.
- Housing: Landlord/Tenants Dispute resolution hearings, eviction notices, repairs, SAFER/RAP applications, BC Housing & M’akola Housing applications.
- Family Law: Information relating to child support or family maintenance, etc.
- Other issues may include: Info on criminal law, credit/debit law and personal bankruptcy, native Law info, mental health legal issues and refugee claims/immigration law. Make appropriate referrals when additional legal advice is needed.
