Grief/Bereavement and Care Giver Support

Provided by Alberni Valley Hospice Society

Provides support, education, and advocacy to individuals and their families facing life-limiting illness, death, and bereavement.
The Port Alberni Valley Hospice provides support for managing grief through programs and services available at the Community Office. Support may take the form of:
  • Individual sessions with the Grief & Bereavement Counsellor
  • Individual sessions with the Child & Youth Grief & Bereavement Counsellor
  • Referral to a Bereavement Support Group
  • Referral for Holistic Health Services
  • Telephone support from the Bereavement Counsellor or an assigned volunteer
  • Anticipatory Grief Support
  • Home Assistance
Group Support:
  • Companions through Grief (Group): 8 week group sessions that provide peer support for adults who are grieving the death of a loved one, family member, or friend.
  • Walk & Talk (Group): This group offers bereavement support for adults in an informal and comfortable way that combines the benefit of stress relieving exercise and companionship. Meet to talk, walk and share with others who are grieving.
Caregiver Support:
  • Anticipatory Grief Support: Trained volunteers and counsellors available to support family members sort through conflicting feelings, new demands and the changes experienced during this difficult phase of life.
  • Caregiver Support Groups: An opportunity for small groups of caregivers to openly discuss challenges and experiences, ask questions, exchange practical information, access resources, vent, share positive stories and find relief from isolation in a safe non judgmental environment.
  • Anticipatory Grief Support: Trained volunteers and counsellors are available to support family members and help sort through conflicting feelings, new demands and changes experienced during this difficult phase.
  • Respite & Vigil Sitting Care: Respite and vigil sitting services provide much needed breaks for the caregiver. Volunteers can be scheduled to provide respite care in the home, the community, hospital or Ty Watson House.
  • Short-Term Respite Stays: Caregivers who would like a break from their current caregiving situation, please contact Alberni Valley Hospice about a short term stay at Ty Watson House.
