Grief/Bereavement and Care Giver Support

Provided by Alberni Valley Hospice Society

Provides individual and group bereavement support to adults in the community who have suffered a loss through death of a loved one. Also offers limited respite care to assist caregivers.
Grief/Bereavement Support:
  • Companions through Grief (Group): 12-week group sessions program to provide peer support to adults who are grieving the death of a loved one, family member, or friend.
  • Telephone support from a counsellor or assigned volunteer
  • Individual sessions with the Bereavement Services Counsellor
  • Referral to a Bereavement Support Group: Offers bereavement support in an informal and comfortable way that combines exercise and companionship. Meet to talk and walk with others who are grieving in a safe environment.
  • Referral for Holistic Health Services: Various services are offered through Hospice under the umbrella of Holistic Health Services, including Healing Touch, Reiki, Massage, and Reflexology.
  • Email Support: Offers online support for individuals to ask questions and receive information and support regarding anticipatory grief, caregiving and caregiver burnout, death, dying and bereavement.
  • Lending library: Offers resources regarding Caregiving and Grief

Care Giver Support:
  • Individual Counselling: Open to all members of the community; it is not necessary for your loved one to have used the residential hospice care services at Ty Watson House in order for you to receive bereavement support.
  • Family Caregiver Support Group: Offers a non-judgmental space to openly discuss challenges and experiences, ask questions, exchange practical information, access resources, vent, share positive stories and get relief from isolation. Group meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month.
  • Respite Care: Volunteers are provided on a regular or ad hoc basis for short periods of time to patient and family caregivers. Volunteers are available to visit in the client's home, hospital, longterm care facilities, and Ty Watson House
  • Caregivers may also benefit from: Healing Touch, Reiki, or other Holistic Health Services, Reading books from the Caregiving section of our Lending Library, Speaking with the Hospice Chaplain
  • Walk & Talk (Group): Offers bereavement support in an informal and comfortable way that combines the benefit of stress-relieving exercise and companionship. Meet to talk, walk and share with others who are grieving.
